During our lesson today, we discussed the idea of NVC (non verbal communication) and how it is used in music videos to create effect and communicate an idea or emotion. 60% of communication occurs non verbally and therefore NVC is vital in a music video as there is usually no dialogue to accompany it. Obviously, artists can communicate through their lyrics, however without the use of NVC, a video would not be engaging to watch and the emotion that they wish to provoke from the audience would not be apparent. It is important that when filming our video, we take into consideration our actors and their use of NVC. If not done correctly or convincingly, the music video would be unsuccessful.
Here is a video from our chosen artist, Blink-182. Use of NVC is very obvious here and the band use it well min order to make the video believable and interesting. Throughout, we see use of eye contact with the camera and different uses of space between the band and the camera - they often move forwards and backwards in front of the camera, putting across a believable performance as a punk rock band. Their gestures and movements are very exaggerated and the ways in which they play their instruments makes for an interesting video. They often interact with their microphones as well as their instruments which I think is a successful action that convinces the audience they are good live performers. The band's costumes conform to the ideas of our genre conventions and similarly the costumes of the characters in this video put across this common idea of teenage rebellion.
